Bradford to Launch Major E-Bike Hire Scheme This March to Boost Green Travel

BRADFORD, UK – Bradford Council has officially confirmed that its highly anticipated electric bike hire scheme will launch in March 2026. This landmark initiative, funded by the city’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ) revenue, aims to transform urban mobility across the district by providing a sustainable, affordable, and healthy alternative to traditional car journeys. As the city prepares for its role as the UK City of Culture, this scheme represents a vital step toward a modern, zero-emission transport infrastructure.

The scheme, operated by the UK’s leading micromobility provider, Beryl, will feature a fleet of up to 200 e-bikes distributed across 50 strategically placed docking stations. Key locations include Bradford Interchange, Forster Square Station, and Bradford University, alongside major hospitals and colleges. By integrating with existing cycle superhighways, the network is designed to support daily commutes, student travel, and short city trips, ensuring that Bradford remains a forward-thinking hub for innovation and sustainability.

How will the Bradford e-bike scheme work? Users can easily hire an e-bike from any designated docking station via a dedicated mobile app. Once the journey is complete, the bike can be returned to any station within the network. To ensure widespread participation, the council will offer various incentives and discounts, making the service a cost-effective option for residents, students, and visitors alike. This flexibility is essential for navigating the district's unique hilly landscape, which often discourages traditional cycling.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, highlighted the scheme's impact on the city’s future:

"This initiative provides a convenient and easy option for journeys around Bradford. By utilizing Clean Air Zone funding, we are reinvesting directly into the health of our community and the sustainability of our environment. It’s about making active travel accessible for everyone, ensuring that our transport network is fit for the 21st century while reducing our collective carbon footprint."

Reinvesting in a Cleaner, Greener Bradford the £800,000 investment is a core component of Bradford’s commitment to improving air quality and public health. Public consultations regarding specific docking station locations will begin in January, ensuring the network meets the direct needs of local businesses and residents. This collaborative approach ensures that the scheme is a community-driven project that supports the city's long-term economic and environmental goals.
